Introduction

Our Curriculum

Work Together

Our curriculum is shaped by the unique character of our small school and is inspired by the principles of the Harmony Project. We help children understand the connections between themselves, their community, the natural world and the wider world, encouraging them to become curious, thoughtful and responsible learners.

We live our vision of Work Together, Grow Together, Flourish Together, giving children the opportunity to learn, collaborate and thrive across both schools.

Our curriculum aims to:

  • Build strong literacy, language and communication skills.
  • Develop confidence and fluency in mathematics.
  • Encourage children to make meaningful connections in their learning.
  • Broaden understanding of different cultures, communities and perspectives.
  • Celebrate our local area while exploring the wider world.
  • Raise aspirations and inspire children to achieve their best.
  • Foster curiosity, creativity and independent thinking.
  • Help children develop a strong connection to nature and the outdoors.
  • Promote sustainability, responsibility and respect for the environment.
  • Prepare children for life beyond primary school.
  • Work closely with families to support every child's learning journey.
  • Develop resilience, confidence and a lifelong love of learning.
  • Provide rich experiences that inspire and motivate.
  • Create opportunities to perform, compete and celebrate success.

Grow Together

As small schools with mixed-age classes, many of our curriculum themes are planned on a two-year cycle to ensure all children receive a broad and balanced education throughout their primary years.

Using a Harmony approach, children revisit important ideas, build on prior learning and develop a deeper understanding of the connections between people, places and the world around them. This reflects the school's curriculum planning approach.

We deliver learning through:

  • Enquiry-based learning and meaningful questions.
  • First-hand experiences and educational visits.
  • Rich and memorable learning opportunities.
  • A strong focus on vocabulary and communication.
  • Reading across the curriculum.
  • Learning about different cultures and communities.
  • Effective use of technology, including 1:1 iPads.
  • Regular outdoor learning and exploration.
  • Opportunities to learn about sustainability and caring for our world.
  • Collaborative learning; where children learn with and from each other.

Flourish Together

We want every child to leave our schools with a love of learning, confidence in their abilities and a strong sense of belonging.

Inspired by the Harmony Project, we encourage children to understand themselves, respect others and care for the world around them.

We celebrate success through:

  • Weekly celebrations of learning.
  • Displays that showcase children's achievements.
  • Sharing learning with families and the wider community.
  • Purposeful outcomes that give learning a real audience.
  • Opportunities for reflection and improvement.
  • Recognition of positive learning behaviours, including resilience, perseverance and teamwork.
  • Encouraging children to take ownership of their learning.
  • Celebrating contributions to school, community and the environment.
  • Creating memorable experiences that help every child flourish.
