Core Subjects - English, Mathematics and Science

At Bridstow CE Primary School, English, Mathematics and Science form the foundation of our curriculum. Through these subjects, children develop the essential knowledge, skills and understanding they need to succeed in school and beyond. Our curriculum is influenced by the principles of The Harmony Project, helping children to make meaningful connections in their learning and develop a deeper understanding of themselves, their communities and the wider world.

English
We believe that strong literacy skills unlock a lifetime of learning. Through reading, writing, speaking and listening, we help children become confident communicators, enthusiastic readers and capable writers. We use the Talk for Writing approach throughout the school, enabling children to develop their speaking, storytelling and writing skills through a structured process of imitation, innovation and independent application. Rich texts, purposeful writing opportunities and a strong focus on vocabulary support learning across the curriculum.
Early reading is taught through the Twinkl Phonics programme, a systematic synthetic phonics approach that helps children develop secure decoding, reading and spelling skills from the Early Years onwards.
Mathematics
We teach mathematics through a mastery approach, helping children develop fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills. We encourage children to think mathematically, explain their thinking and apply their learning to real-life situations with confidence.
Science
Science inspires curiosity about the world around us. Through practical investigations, observation and enquiry, children develop their understanding of living things, materials, forces, space and the environment. We encourage children to ask questions, explore ideas and think like scientists.
Together, these core subjects provide the strong foundations that enable our children to grow as independent, resilient and successful learners.
